Multi-Specialty Private Hospital

INVESTMENT PROPOSAL

Project: Multi-Specialty Private Hospital

Location: Jaffna, Sri Lanka

Proposed by: RNL in collaboration with Leading Health Sector Investor

1. THE OPPORTUNITY

Jaffna District is one of Sri Lanka’s most underserved healthcare markets.

Despite being home to 600,000+ residents and the region’s premier public facility (Teaching Hospital Jaffna), there is no fully equipped private multi-specialty hospital capable of meeting the rising demand for specialist care, advanced diagnostics, and quality inpatient services.

This creates a clear supply–demand gap and a compelling first-mover investment opportunity.

2. MARKET DRIVERS

  • Demographics: Rapidly ageing population and a rising burden of non-communicable diseases (diabetes, heart disease, cancer, CKD).

  • Utilization: Sharp national increase in OPD visits, clinic attendance, and hospital admissions (2022–2023).

  • Spending Power: Growing health insurance coverage, higher out-of-pocket spending, and a distinct preference for Western medicine.

  • Diaspora Influence: Strong inflow from the diaspora with the ability and willingness to pay for quality private healthcare.

  • Access Barriers: Limited local access to advanced diagnostics forces patients to travel outside the Northern Province for care.

3. THE GAP

  • Public Sector: Teaching Hospital Jaffna faces patient overflow, congestion, and service gaps.

  • Private Sector: Existing private providers lack scale, ICU capacity, modern diagnostics, and multi-specialty coverage.

  • Infrastructure: Absence of a state-of-the-art laboratory and imaging hub in the region.

Conclusion: Demand is proven; Supply is constrained.
